BUCS bouldering tryouts, and a new toy.

Wednesday 22nd was BUCS tryouts, with the aim of building the university team for the upcoming competition in February. As we gathered at our meeting point outside the student halls in Buxton, a dingy mist wound its way through the air, promising horrible dampness for anyone foolish enough to venture out into the Peak.
Not to worry though, because we were headed to the Works. Boldly we set out in our small entourage of cars, driving with the wind on our backs and hope in our eyes... And then scuttled inside the warm safety of the venue before the wind and rain could remove a layer of skin from our faces.

The premise of the trials was simple enough, we each chose a problem each of a set grade, and then attempted each others problems in turn. This worked well to expose personal climbing styles, and it wasn't long until everybody found something that rattled their cage, including yours truly (pockets, grr!). As the difficulty ramped up competition got more fierce and everyone was pushing hard. Strangely, I ended up being much more consistent on the harder problems, most likely because I was putting more consideration into sequence and visualisation of the route rather than simply pulling on and throwing it move by move.
All in all, a good day - team results will be bandied about soon enough so when that happens I'll get them up.

Oh, and I've picked up a new (ehem, second hand) bike so I can get more experience for my guide quals and hopefully get onto level 1 leader, finally. It's a Specialized Pitch, and it's going to be a lot of fun. I'm looking forward to getting it out in the Peak and testing it on some classic trails.

Until next time...

Mischa.

Oh, and I couldn't leave it without a cheeky picture, now could I?
